“Guyana, like many other countries in the Caribbean is highly dependent on imports of fossil fuel for energy needs. Guyana being a low lying coastal state is extremely vulnerable to sea level rise and climate change. Extreme climatic events causing flooding also affect Guyana.”
--National Circumstance, Government of Guyana-National Climate Committee, March 3, 2009

Recently, Guyana has experienced several precipitation events that have led to severe damages. To name a few examples: intense rainfall in May-June 1996 at Moco-Moco village, in the south west of Guyana, resulted in flooding along rivers for several weeks. During the 1997/1998 El Niño, below normal rainfall was observed in Guyana, which caused huge losses in agriculture. Heavy precipitation in January 2005 resulted in an unprecedented flooding along the coast of Guyana resulting in severe physical damage and economic loss to the country. The magnitude of the damage caused by the floods that affected Guyana was estimated to be equivalent to 59% of current GDP for the year 2004.
More recently the prolonged and intense rainfall in 2008 has lead to water accumulation in the agricultural areas. These unusual weather events are already proving to be more than a mere inconvenience; they are having serious consequences on one of the most critical sectors in Guyana's economy, the agriculture sector. Guyana's agricultural sector is the major contributor to the country's economy; it contributes to about 32% of GDP.
